There is a Laptop to IDE Hard Drive Adapter available at http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat%5fid=906&sku=17705 You can remove the hard drive from the laptop and install it on your PC using this connector (read the instructions that come with it). You can then install Windows on that drive. Once Windows is installed, take the drive back out of the PC and put it back in the laptop. When you first start the laptop with the new HD, it will find new devices and install most, if not all, of the necessary drivers. You may be required to provide a CD to install some of the drivers. But if you can get on the Internet, you can also search for and download the drivers for your hardware. If you have a drivers CD that came with the laptop, you might want to try copying the drivers off the CD and onto the laptop HD while it's installed in the PC. A few notes:
This isn't an overly easy task, so make sure you're up to it.
The adapter is roughly $10.00 plus tax and S&H
You'll need a valid Windows installation CD for your laptop.

I think your question is, "Can you install Windows on a laptop, using a cd designed for a desktop?"
There are 2 types of Windows CD's. Microsoft Windows CD's, would install on either a desktop or laptop, with no differences. The other is an OEM CD, which was made by HP, for example, that contains Windows, and will also have drivers for the particualr Desktop it was designed for. Those will normally only install on the computer for which it was designed.

You will have to buy an external usb hard drive, or better a NEW CD/DVD drive!
If you take the laptop hard drive out and install in your PC, the software will detect your PC hardware and not the laptop!
CHECK THE BIOS SETTINGS on your laptop!
Windows, (ALL VERSIONS), are licenced to ONE computer, so by trying to use the SAME on both, you are breaking the copyright!

Your BEST option is to take it to a local computer shop, get them to do it for you (around £30?) Then ask them about External CD Drive, ask them if it will boot from CD even though its on USB..

You could try booting from a W98 floppy bootdisk.
CD drivers included (mscdex.exe), so this might be enough to get your CD drive working. I can't remember if there is USB support.
You could also try a WinXP boot floppy. Download it and create 6 disks. (Takes ages to boot - hundreds of drivers).

Your chances are slim and none! Most PC manufacturers all have OEM software versions and they WONT run on any other PC than that particular make and model!
