This isn't really a relationship question but you all seem so clever in here:-)

I've written a story for a children's picture book but what should I do? Should I approach publishers directly or try to find an agent first?

All advice welcome.

Before you approach any publisher, get the story copyrighted to protect your creation. Publisher's would just steal it and then make money off it with maybe a few modifications. Don't trust anyone's word that they won't do this. Always protect yourself by getting it in writing.

I approached the U.S. Government Veterans Administration once about a 300 page research paper i'd written on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

They stole it from me, and today the doctors who work at the V.A. claim it as their own work. Just about every pamphlet, magazine article etc..... they have been paid for is using word for word right out of my research paper. While they make hundreds of thousands since 1993 on my research paper, i've not earned a penny for all my work.

Copyright your work before finding an agent.

Find an agent, he knows the trade inside and out and will know which publisher is likely to take your book

go straight to the publishers! they are best at giving the advice out, after all they are the ones who decide whether to publish your book or not! get your answers from the horses mouth and not the middle man (agent)

I would send it on to publishers first and see if they're interested.

Yep, just publish it yourself. Very hard to get publishers to fork out and fund it.............. probably cos they've way too much choice.
