I am Dominican and I know exactly what you mean. I've had many arguments with my mother regarding how she needs to start seeing people as their individuals selves and not a skin colour or race. I have notice that in the Dominican people often have the shallowest conversation about what shade of black they are. It's a shame since we have so many beautiful people.
It's really sad when people cannot see the beauty among the many colours so when a guy tells you "you're pretty for a dark-skinned girl" just be glad she showed you his true ignorant self before you got in too deep!

People in my class once discussed this, why light-skinned people in general are conceived as prettier than the dark-skinned. My complexion's somewhere in the middle. Maybe it goes back to the whole darker than a paper bag thing from the old days, a sort of discrimination within the race. I'm not sure why that is but I have an idea.

No but i'm Latina, my skin is olive complexion, but i dont get it whether your dark or light makes no difference to your attractiveness well it shouldn't anyway, there is way too much emphasis on how dark or how light a person is, you always find it brought up more in the black community, where they are so many shades of black across the spectrum....just be who you are girl, and remember the saying the blacker the berry the sweeter the fruit, be happy.

Latino people along with blacks are completely confused and have been affected by white supremacy so its no surprise that you have a Dominican family that does this. Sad in deed because they are your family members so you have to deal with them on some level. Thank god I had a strong Afrocentric grandmother that taught me to appreciate dark-skin. What you said, is part of the reason why I don't like Latinos; a lot of them are hypocrites and will say on one hand that they have all color Latinos which makes them great and then turn around and be racist and discriminate against the darker skinned people of their own culture. I have even heard Latinos say there is no light/dark skin issues in the Latino community, totally ignoring that their issues with it are just as bad as African Americans and Indians in the Caste system in India.

To your first answer; the guy known as **** Monster is exactly what his name refers to him as. He's a **** monster so you shouldn't really be offended by a guy who is a **** monster. He also has no life. You can tell that by the way he chooses to insult people over the internet as if they're really going to give a damn about what he thinks. As for your question, I'm light-skinned and I love me some dark-skinned black chocolate with muscles.
To the answer directly above mine; the idea of beauty is a light-skinned person. Wow, talk about having two morons in here. Basically the lighter you are the hotter you are is his mindset. Pale white guys gross me out. Why do white guys always have to get tans to be closer to the skin color of black people, u friggin doofus.

Skin issues I feel are more bought up in Latin communities than the Black communities...The difference is that it's more accepted to think this way in Latin communities...If ur black and you want to be white..then something is wrong wit u...if u want to be white in the Latin community is not considered a bad thing..thats a good thing to them.

It's the Black men that only like light-skinned women or think that light-skinned women are just more attractive than dark-skinned women that say that because they have the idea that most dark-skinned women are ugly.

beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. look inside and not outside and true beauty will always be the light within. i have seen many who are physically dark and light, i have loved both. but i have also seen inside all i meet and see the true light and dark within them. i do not judge beauty as a physical aspect, but as what is inside them. even the most physically beautiful people, male and female, have appeared as the blackest of the black inside. open your eyes to what is inside, then you'll know real beauty in the mirror. it isn't a shade, its a light.

The idea of beauty is still a light-skinned person. But still, beauty still shines beyond the shade of one's skin for those who are open-minded.
The comment he made is obviously not very tactful even if he harbors those views.
