i wouldnt think it racist to ask, if you dont ask then you will never know will you? some people may be offended but others are sure to answer your questions.

Of course not. We had a Diversity Day in Birmingham this week
and the ShoeBox company staged a little play about Slavery
and the Abolishment of it. So no - it is not rascist. It is cultural
awareness.

some may take offence, depends who you ask and in what context. in a history class maybe ok, in a bar, maybe not....best to be sensitive to this very emotive issue i would say.
