"The beaten track" is used as a description of the road well-travelled. So, "off the beaten track" is a place that is not commonly visited by travellers.

It means when you are not going with what most other people say/do. As example: if most people buy a notebook computer, you go out and buy a PC...that is n example of "off the beaten path" You do not follow the crowd, and don't do the same things that society thinks should normally be done in a given situation. Does that help any?

When someone says I think we should do this, go this way, follow this person, follow this road and you say No lets find another way and not follow them that is going off the beaten track
