I recently found out that years & years ago someone from my family set up a bank account in England for future generations to use the money to start a business (I live in Australia) and i want to find out all about it, I don't know anything at all, not even the bank name the only thing i know is the family name the account would be under. My family have no idea either & they are completely useless (sounds harsh, you don't know them!!). where would i even begin to start to find out some information????

Not to sound mean. But, why don't you earn the money yourself. Stop trying to live off of a dead man's sweat. What makes you feel this money is owed to you? Perhaps the person who left the money has a son. You don't even know which bank the money was left in! This fact implies you and your family were not close to this person. Now, you want the poor guy's money. I hope you never find the money. I would rather see the bank keep the money. Did you know in most countries, the government eventually claims the money if no immediate family is found w/in a reasonable amount of time after death. The fact is another family member probably already took the money or the government already took control. Try to earn money instead of robbing some poor guy's grave.

Go to your own bank, you'll need an appointment to see the manager. Explain the situation and ask if they know how to find this information. I know that here in Canada, they will look into it for you to a certain point, so it is worth going to your bank. They will be able to find out what information you need to find the money and where to start looking even if they don't look into it for you.
You will need proof that you are decended from this person and you might want to try google search of gov't angencies in England to find out which one governs banks.
Good Luck
