It's an acronym - the magic word that transformed Billy Batson into Captain Marvel. The letters each stood for a mythological God (although Solomon wasn't... I never understood how he fit in to the group):
S - Solomon (wisdom)
H - Hercules (strength)
A - Atlas (stamina)
Z - Zeus (power)
A - Achilles (fearlessness)
M - Mercury (speed)
Captain Marvel was the most popular superhero during the late 40's, and 'Shazam' started making its way into the English vernacular. It's still popular today... the Phoenix Suns' announcer still says 'Shazam!' on every 3 point basket.

Bob ... Yes, it was a word used by the Gomer Pyle character, but he wasn't the first to use this "word." In fact, it doesn't seem to appear in most mainstream dictionaries; I believe it's more of a slang or informally contrived word.
As I grew up (I'm 60 now), the word was used as an exclamation when something occurred surprisingly and/or magically. It is used almost synonymously with "presto."
See my links below for information that reveals that "shazam" was frequently used in the Captain Marvel comic book series.
