Some livebearers can cross breed, but guppies and platys are not one of the possible combinations. Many have tried but there have been no recorded cases of sucess.

Look to the anal fin of the platys to tell them apart. The fin under the fishes belly. The males in long and thin and looks kind of like a tube (which it is) while the female has a "regular" looking fin there.

Yes they can, but in order for that to work, the platies should be girls, and the guppies boys. It'll be easier for love to flow that way. The fish will become a cross-breed known as fire platies or Redfin guppies, depending on genetics.

The other ways to sex a fish is the behavor. Males are generally more active and aggressive during breeding and mate-finding.
If you also look a girls, they usally have a bold, dark spot above their butt. That is the baby-sack.

I recently bought 1 male orange platy, 1 female Mickey mouse platy and 1 female Black molly. I was unaware that the molly was pregnant. I have noticed that since she gave birth, the male orange platy has become overly aggressive in the tank. However he has not attempted to kill any of the fry. But he does attack the Mickey mouse female platy and sometimes the molly as well. I have noticed that the molly tends to stand her ground and fight him back but the poor Mickey mouse platy runs scared everytime the orange platy comes close.

This seems to happen quite often at feeding time and goes on for hours afterward. Only at night do they all tend to settle down for a rest. Just watching this 'bickering' makes me tired too. I sympathize with the poor Mickey mouse platy!

I have noticed that everytime feeding time comes around, the molly knows instinctively that I am approaching the tank and is first in line to get her share, then the male orange platy will come up. But as soon as the Mickey mouse female tries for food, the orange one will start attacking her and chasing her till she gives up. It seems as if he is trying to kill her slowly by not allowing her to eat. Is this the male's way of wearing the female down so she will mate with him?

Would anyone happen to know if this normal behavior that may go along with mating. Or could the orange male platy be sick thus making him aggressive and trying to kill the other adults? He does not touch the young fry of the black molly and this is why I am wondering if this is some kind of mating ritual. Maybe you could offer some more insight. Should I take him out of the tank for a while and see what happens? He sure seems to be a mean spirited little guy!

This odd behavior is very common with platies. Basically the male is trying to breed with the female. Male platies aren't like humans, they are relentless. They will constantly bug the females until they die, sometimes hours on end. They have a very large mating drive. This being said, it is nature for the Male platy to act this way. The best advise I can give you is to get a few more female platies for the male to chase. That way he will spend alot of his time trying to figure out which ones to mate with and less time bugging one to death. I recommened at least 3 females to each male for this reason. Keep us posted on how they do.

Can a platy and a molly cross breed? Could the male guppie breed with the molly? Can a platy & swordtail crossbreed? Platy/Molly Mix.../..PlattyxSwordtail cross? Can Mollies and Platies cross-breed? Is it possible for a Platy to cross breed with a Silver Molly? Swordtail platy interbreed? Can anyone tell me if you can cross breed Platy's, Guppies and Mollies ... I think uncle scott actually mentioned a molly/guppy cross a few weeks back...

The general rule of thumb here is fish breed only within there species. That being said, platies and swordtails are so very closely related they will often cross breed. As far as mollies are concerned they only breed with other mollies. Guppies are the same way they stay with in species and do not crossbreed. Mollies and Platies do not breed togther, I have never seen any evidence of this happening. They are in two different geniuses, so it would take a lot of work in the lab to artificially cross-breed them.
