I don't think the lagoon rooms are assigned as smoking rooms...I know there are some smoking rooms on the ocean view side. You can smoke in the hallway, at the elevators, on the balcony, and definitely at the pool area. You can smoke on the balcony in the non-smoking rooms. What are they gonna do??? Throw you out?? LOL I have actually seen people smoke in the non-smoking rooms, but not advised. I actually think the smoking rooms are assigned by floors, but not 100% sure. It may be designated by sides of the hotel. Almost any room will have a partial view of the ocean. And if it is any comfort.......the lagoon side is just as beautiful in a different way. You can see the entire hotel strip and the sun sets over the water at night, which is absolutely beautiful. You will be pleased with any room that you get!!!!

The first item you need to make a decision about is if you wish to stay at a European Plan resort which includes the room only in the price, or an All-Inclusive resort where meals and beverages are included in the price. Of course you pay more for the All-Inclusive resorts because of obvious reasons, so you may not benefit since you are traveling with young children. The upside is you can often find a much better quality EP resort for the same money you would pay to stay at an AI resort. Here are a few to consider and investigate: Gran Melia-offers AI and EP Le Meridien-great kid's club Hilton Golf & Spa Resort-an even better kid's club Don't worry about finding a restaurant to eat in, there are literally hundreds to choose from in Cancun, seriously. If you do wish to stay at an AI resort, the following receive great reveiws from travelers with children: Dreams Resort Great Parnassus Crown Paradise Club Riu Cancun Gran Caribe Real Barcelo Tucancun I know this seems like a lot of choices, but that's the beauty of Cancun's Hotel Zone, you have lots of choices. Whatever you do, enjoy the process because planning the trip is really half the fun. Happy Planning, 212eric

Mexico is a disaster for public health regarding smoking. People smoke anywhere, so make sure the wind doesn't blow your way, and you are in a place with plenty of fresh air.

You can ask the hotel for a no smoking area - but don't expect any co operation from the locals :)

Also, here's some alternatives to compare your choice to - the pictures ar fairly helpful.

Since Mexican's are not yet against smoking I even doubt that they have separate rooms. Anywhere you can smoke on the balcony - if not leave the place. Ocean/Lagoon view: reserve the one you like in advance with your travel agent/Hotel. (Has nothing to do with smoking, lol)

Just came back from the Riu. Smoking is allowed everywhere except for specialty restaurants and half of the main buffet. Smokers turn to your left when you go in.

I stayed there, and you can smoke anywhere you want. There are no designated smoking areas, and smoking hasn't been "outlawed" there, like at home.
