Depends on what kind of engine. Diesel or gasoline ?

Diesel engine usually run on low RPM (1000-1200 RPM on idle). Maksimum RPM generally around 5000 - 6000. If this is the case, you'll need to change the gear from 1st to 2nd at 3000 - 3500 RPM, 2nd to 3rd at 2700-3000 and more lower on the highest gear.

Gasoline engine run more higher RPM than diesel, usually 1500 - 1800 on idle. Maximum RPM is around 7000 until 8000 RPM. In this case you can get in more higher RPM on changing gears.

once the needle on the tachometer goes well into the red area, that means shift. usually if you hear the engine bouncing off some sort of 'limiter' that's a sure sign you can start thinking about shifting.

You want to watch your rpm not your mph or kpm. Usually shift when you hit 3,000 rpm. But it depends on the driver. I shift higher for some reason idk, I normally shift around 4,000 - 4,500 rpm. Just make sure you don't red line it or stall it out and you'll be just fine.
