It's a coincidence. In the past, the moon was closer to the earth and looked bigger in the sky, so it completely covered the sun with room to spare. In the future, it will be further away and will no longer cover the sun, even at the centre of the eclipse.

We just happen to live at a time when the moon looks the same size as the sun.

The sun and Moon have the same apparent size when viewed from Earth.

Even though the sun is much bigger, it is much farther away so it appears smaller.

The clue is in the distance, and the relative positions, asviewed from earth at that time!

You can hide a quarter behind a dime if the quarter is far enough away.
