Hey how you doing

I am an asian girl and I was brought up in the UK I lived in east london until I was about 7 then we moved to kent. I was sent to a school where I was the only only asian there.

I was brought up with manners and religous beliefs and i brought them all with me. When I did get there I had never before had to identify myself as asian or anything before. I thought I was just human but being away from your culture makes you face who you truely are. I was not accepted by these people they called me a paki all day, did that make me asian? Then when i actually on rare occasions meet other people that looked like (me who i assumed where asian) they told me that i was not asian as i did not have an accent and could not do or know things that are traditional of the asian culture.

So you see my friend there are two sides to this very asian coin. The conflict between the tradtional verses the very modern asian culture. I believe i am asian not just because of my skin tone or the fact that i am identified as a paki in a degrading way. I believe asian is more from within. Its not just keeping up tradition and culture and fitting in with two communities.

Its about having self repect and not feeling the need to prove to anyone that you are more white or more asian. Please look a little deeper, as what you see is not always the whole person.

I am proud to be me. I know in myself i can not please the white community or the asian community all of the time. I can only take responsiblity for how I behave, react, and what I say and how I carry myself as a person.

I am glad for your question, and I hope other asians will be replying to you in a positive way.

The asian friends of my children knew because of their parents, that they were asian. Some grow up looking at TV, speak as good English as anyone, look past the barrier you see, and figure they are as good as any white person. In many schools they rank higher in academics. The childen with lower level interests or academics and are oriental, are as ignorant as white kids who just see color, etc. as the difference in people.

Is there even such a thing as "acting white"?
