Why is India poor??? Because it was stolen from. If you look back at history you'll see that India's resources were exploited and the wealth looted. So it got off to a bad start post-independence.
Now after so many years, India is slowly but surely coming out of poverty. But due to its sheer size and the imbalanced wealth distribution, the task to wipe out poverty is difficult.
The cities are doing much better than villages. Here you see more development and progress. But yes that's a fraction of India's population.
The government is doing a lot of work to eradicate poverty, but it is not an easy task. Also India has had the bad fortune of having corrupt officials, who continued to loot the common man of his money (by misusing tax payers money)
Though there is intent to change it will take at least 20-30 years till the old generation is replaced by younger, more educated people. Hope the younger generation will not follow in the footsteps those gone before but strive to prosper modern India.

The biggest reason is that everyone is asking this question but nobody is doing his bit with all sincerity and dedication. Agreed that the government is not doing enough but are we, the citizen of India, contributing to the development of our country with all our might. No. Rather we are looking for someone else to clean up the mess for us. We show total apathy and lack of responsibility towards our social obligations. We do not know our councillors or MLAs, the various schemes the govt. has introduced to reduce poverty or the persons responsible for implementation of these schemes. As a result no one is ever held responsible for the state of affairs and we are left with the same question.

Who says India is a poor country,I Think an other three to four years India will be one of the 4th most development country in a Global Value.Government need our support we need to help our country to grow is not what our country can do for us is how we can help our country to grow in a high economic Level.

who has tolld whether india is poor? never india poor please go behind 50 years all the villages in india in good development even there is no transport facilities and communication facilities. all village people for their liveliwwod got enogh food and shelter facilities and every year people celebrated gods temple very neatly
they are naturally in good culture but now the transport developed lotof thing in india , communication facilities developed lot of things
and national growth also increased but all the money gone to some ones pockets.i.e. cinefeilds, politicians pockets,and high officials pocket in india if it has been splited throught nations people pockets , realy the india is vallarasu inthe world and also we got 1/6th of the population in the world if our all human workforce is utilised by government the the india will devlop very fast inthe world

Government does many things - on paper - ever heard of jawar Rozgar Yojna or Mid Day meal schemes.
The problem with these is that they just make beurocrats richer...
The only control over them is the elected representatives which are always happy getting their cut.
The solution is education. Its education which makes sure that such schemes have a better impact in Kerela than UP...

it is due to a socialist-style economy for 50 years or so (1951-1991).
NOTE: 1951 cos it was then that the 1st 5yr plan was implemented
post-1991 govt has intorduced privatisation, globalisation and liberalisation. u can see many of its benefits now. better TV and telecommunications. reduction of inflation to 5-6% from 12% in 1990s. and so many more....
but u must be patient. china took 25 yrs to do what it did, we need time (and good politicians!)

India is a vast country with a huge density of population.So it is not write always to blame the government for our poor condition because it has made many plans for the people to make them rich.

India is very Rich, but the people are poor. why? because our politicians use their innocents. every politicians have multi million dollars in overseas bank. who's son working for monthly salary? no one? every family members are very very rich. the govt thinking about their 5 years services until next election. Rich politicians, Poor People. its India.
