For my Political and Legal Class at School I am to write an essay on "Democracy is said to be the most desirable form of political and legal system for both indiviuals and a community compared to other systems". I'm just interested in other peoples views on the subjects, especially things such as if they agree or disagree with this statement or if they believe another type of government i better. If possible could people who answers give reasons why or why not. Thanks everyone. Any input will be much appreciated.

I think that in every political system the "leaders" and "powerful people" do whatever they want to do with the nation. Maybe the democratic system is the more soft one but In my opinion politics use it as a disguise their actions. The main objective is to control the people and the resources.

I don't think democracy works because in my life I've never witnessed a truly content public with their Government at hand. Canada is the most corrupt Democratic Government I've seen, doing what they want against the will of the people and then when an enquiry is done (say on $100,000,000. squandered in a sponsorship scandal 2004) the Government tells the public to "mind their own business". I'd like to try a dictatorship next time cause at least your not being lied to! What have we got to loose, another $100,000,000.?

I'll be admittedly simplistic. When people have a voice in their own governing and the concept of government being of, for, and by the people, by their own investment society will be more orderly and rewarding.

Don't confuse capitalism and socialist, marxist, or communist.

There is nothing rewarding about "communism" et al unless you're one of the dictators on top - the old saying goes "the government pretends to pay us and we pretend to work".

A "government" cannot gift you with that which inherently, as a citizen, belongs to its citizens. Taxes for instance do not belong to government, its the taxpayers' money. A representative government should have some responsibility to the citizen taxpayer how those collected taxpayer funds are spent.

Under capitalism every person has the opportunity to gain by his/her own efforts and talents. Opportunity.

People especially in west have been “brain washed” to accept that democracy is the best form of governance, but this is not so, all over our history we have had different types of governance systems although they all had a “democratic” touch to them. (not even the most powerful king could survive for very long without the backing of his subjects). China in today’s world does not have democracy at present and is a thriving country. All systems have flaws, but the flaws of democracy are not evident to us because we all follow it or are “forced” to follow it.
And the non-democratic countries present (except china) in the world are mostly funded by foreign countries, no country has established a non-democratic system by its own decision, it has been forced upon them by other nations, one very good example is Saudi Arabia, which is backed by USA. North Korea, which gets help from China. It would be interesting to see a nation build its own non-democratic system of governance. Till then democracy seems to be the “only” choice available to us.

A pure democracy is actually quite cumbersome on any level higher than a city-state. Think about it... any major decision must be made by a vote of the entire population. Athens achieved this for a very brief time, but it was not sustainable.

If you believe that you live in a democracy, you're in the wrong class.

democracy is great to give people the opportunity to make something of themselves, but communism, if correctly applied can work wonders for society. it has never worked because governments are usually greedy and cannot follow the principals but if it was run right it would give everyone an equal pay and eliminate heirachies in society, getting rid of all the problems with making low minimum wages and having single people controlling more than they should by being wealthy. it would make all people 'equal'. don't get me wrong, i love the idea that if i have the drive, i can become rich, but if everyone was equal, i don't think that would be to bad either.

Research en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy ... then write your essay. "Democracy" is just too big a concept to describe briefly.
