My husband and I are trying to conceive. We are both in our late 20's, in good health. He has fathered one child by a previous marriage, I have no children yet. I'm just curious - how long did it take you to conceive once you started trying? Also, how did you deal with the disappointment each month when you got a big fat negative on an HPT?

It happened on the third month of trying. I thought I was going to conceive right away, immediately after we began trying. The first two months that it didn't work out were so hard for me. I know it seems unrealistic to be upset at waiting only two months but I was still very disappointed. Unfortunately, I miscarried at 5 weeks and it was even more devastating. I am waiting for my next period to come so we can start trying again. But, to answer your question, dealing with the negative HPT was very hard and I cried every time my period came. But I kept telling myself that I can't set unrealistic goals and that when the right time comes, it will happen. My husband and I are also in our late 20s and are very healthy. If you are trying for more than one year, I would go to the doctor to check things out. I wish you the best.

I didn't start ttc until I was 34. My husband had two children from a previous marriage as well. It took me 3 months to conceive the first one. Unfortunately, I had a miscarriage. The second one took 9 months. It was very disappointing, but some medical issues were discovered along the way that had interferred with conception. I had a full term, healthy baby girl. We started ttc again when she was 10 months. The third one took 8 months. This was the most difficult because I thought we had figured out the problem. I was also ovulating each month. There were some months I cried, but I had to remember that I already had a beautiful daughter and if I was only able to be her mommy, then I was happy and greatful for that. I stopped stressing about it, but also went to see a fertility specialist based on my OB's recommendation. He thought maybe there was something he was missing. Turns out, I actually conceived about a week before my visit with the fertility specialist. Of course I didn't know that until a couple weeks later. I am currently 11 weeks pregnant again and everything is fine so far. It's funny how things work out. I would suggest making an appointment with your OBGYN and let him/her know you are ttc. It's always best to get an exam and have the doctor run some routine blood work. It's much better to correct minor problems in the beginning than try for a year without luck and then go to the doctor, only to find out you could've saved yourself a year of heartbreak. Best of luck to you.

Sadly, due to health issues unrelated to childbearing, I had to give up trying to conceive. However, we'd tried for 19 months before then, but nothing. The more you worry, the more the stress can affect your chances. I found joining a forum specifically about TTC was very helpful. I chose www.babycentre.co.uk. Some women on there have tried for 5 or 6 years, other fell in the first month.
If you're really worried, go to your doctor. For the female, a routine blood test taken around 21 days after the start of your last period will tell whether you're ovulating; simply having regular periods doesn't mean that you're ovulating. For the male, it's a sperm sample, I'm afraid. It needs to be fresh so that it can be tested within an hour. Good luck.

With my daughter it took us about 8 months because my husband was stationed in the army and never home at the right time. Now with my son it only took 2 weeks.I had been on the pill for 6 1/2 years and due to us not having a car i couldn`t make it to the Health Department to get me some more pills.I thought we could do the timing thing to not get pregnant, but that didn`t work.

Took us 5 years. But we discovered my wife had a very large fibroid. Once that was removed, she got pregnant. Now we have 2 kids....

It was tough to deal with the disappointment...most months we got very sad, but never gave up hope.
