If the socket type and the bus speed of a CPU match the specifications of the motherboard you are attempting to install it in, does the CPU speed have any impact on whether or not it will work in the motherboard?
For example, I am attempting to replace an Intel Celeron socket 478 1.8 GHz 400MHz system bus CPU on an old emachines motherboard. I have no idea what the fastest CPU speed is that the motherboard supports? I do know that it obviously supports socket 478 CPUs with a 400MHz system bus. So would it be safe to assume that this motherboard can support ANY socket 478 CPU that runs on a 400MHz system bus or is the CPU speed a factor that must be used in determining whether or not its compatible with a specific motherboard? Please help. Thanks.

Typically if you install a faster processor then what is designed for the motherboard, then the processor will be dumbed down to match what the motherboard can handle. If you know that the older mother can handle a 400MHz CPU then the 1.8 Ghz CPU should function to capacity. You should not have a problem using the 1.8 GHz CPU in the older board.

socket 478 motherboards will support any socket 478 processor. A processor uses a multiplier to be compatible with the FSB/HT in the first place. So say you have a 500MHz FSB and your processor is a 2 gig, it is multiplied 4x of FSB, goes real in depth but thats fsb/socket,processor in a nutshell

Mother board bus speed is a main factor to support a cpu. if u want to attach a cpu on a motherboard u should to confirm that it bus speed is same lilke both. bus speed has written on cpu.but the motherboard have no bus speed on it. it only on it's packet. or if u want to confirm u will contact any hardware vendor in your city.

You need to consult the mainboard manual or its website, to see clearly until what processor the mainboard can support.
