That's a myth. Goldfish, and other fish, have memories spanning several months in the least.

What you are seeing isn't 'memory' but conditioning. Any animal (including humans) can be condition. Conditioning is a form of training (like what they do with dolphins and whales at zoo's and aquariums) and is useful for more 'primative' animals (i.e. fish). Remember Pavlov? He conditioned his dogs to associate food with a bell. You've conditioned you fish to associate opening the tank lid (or the jar of food) with the thought of food. Bet you didn't know you were training them, huh?
Conditioning has no impact on how much of a memory an animal has; however, you cannot condition certain ones (like most insect although some have been conditioned).

No, that is no longer actual. They "clicker-experienced" goldfish .... nicely you are able to not incredibly clicker practice them such as you are able to a canine, regardless of the undeniable fact that it became into an identical theory and technique, only diverse components. So no massive distinction. besides, the ever-present "they" clickertrained goldfish to love swim by a ring or some thing like that... and then left the fish by myself for 'x' days, and got here lower back to objective them, and prefer 70% of the fish remembered completely. Heh, they only act stupid a super sort of the time.

Good question....my beta did that too....he knew when the light above him went on each morning that it was time to eat and he went right up to the top and opened his mouth for food. LOL It was pretty funny. Maybe it's just one of those things that stay engraved in their minds because it's part of their survival.

actually I'm surprised they have memory. They function on instinct, perhaps smell and sound too

That would suck, how would they know who their predators are and when it's unsafe?
