E.g. the career, the children, the house, a full life - or do we have to compromise on one of these things??? Just interested in people's experiences and what you think is truly possible...

Man or woman; can anyone have it all? I think not. Life is about compromise. Pick what's most important to you and give your all. You can't be all things to your family & career. One has to take second place. I do think though that you can have a full life with either choice. It depends on what fulfills you the most.

In a lifetime long ago...I tried this myself. Things were probably easier as my husband and I worked together, running our business from home so no long hours of tiring travelling to get to the office. I needed lots of help though and to have "all my ducks in a row" - meaning being really well organised. Sometimes things went well for months. Good childcare/reliable cleaner and ironer/day off each week to shop for food (this was before internet deliveries!)/quality time at the weekend.
Other times I was in a sort of despair when my well-constructed life crumbled - like my day nanny got pregnant (how bloody thoughtless). Cleaners often just didn't turn up so had to find a new one. Car broke down on the way to the supermarket.
Eventually, through no fault of our own, we had to wind up the business and I decided to take some time out. This stretched to five years from when my sons were six and eight, until the youngest went to secondary school. It was such a lovely time for us all.
For me having time to be with my kids and time for myself and my husband were much more precious but then I am a bit of a lazy so and so deep down and I really enjoyed not having the career part to cope with. Luckily we still had enough cash coming in the have a nice life.
I think all things are possible but it's a real balancing act and as a woman/mum you have to try not to be "the best" at everything. Allow yourself to be "good enough" at some things, and hopeless at others - and get yourself help with these!
