its either a ganglion, a trigger finger or dupuytrens disease. If it is on the palm side it is not the first one. if your finger sometimes bends and gets stuck down its the middle one. you need to be middle age + for it to be the last one really. a few more details about where it is exactly, etc would help.
Cheers

I think it is called a polyp. There is a weakening in the covering of one of the tendons in your hand which is allowing the tendon to extrude through and cause the lump. The old way of curing this was to place your hand flat on a solid surface and get someone to hit the area quite hard with a copy of the family bible. This popped the tendon back into place and was usually a permanent cure. Otherwise I would take your hand to your doctor and let him do the diagnosis. (The above story about hitting it is quite true but it must be the family bible)

Is it a lump of skin or a hard lump? If its a hard lump, does it move when you touch it or is it slightly moveable.
If its moveable, it may be a cist. Go the docs
If its not moveable, its possibly what barrowman said, but I dont think its called a polyp. Its a harmless build up of calcium deposits, & it is true that they used to hit it with a heavy book.
If its causing you pain then get it checked out. For peace if mind & a painfree hand!
