Hinduism does not preach untouchability. If any one (not just hindus) does practise it, then they should not be considered as human beings. Every religion preaches respect and love for your fellow beings.

Tell me honestly friend.... will you touch the beggar on your street corner, or an untidy child playing on the street, or the one who comes to clean your toilets.

If your answer is YES to the above questions, then you are just great.

Any normal human being will say only NO.

So you will agree that in every human mind the demarcation is made not by their caste, but by their profession (as mentioned by one of our friends quoting the Bagavat Gita)

No law can delete this from our society. There seems to be no SIN in this as far as we dont show disrespect or mean attitude towards them.

Which part of India do you come from? I've been to plenty of places in the country, but have never seen such foolish activities.

Your question seems to be biased. People nowadays don't care about the status of the person while touching it but they do consider cleanliness. They would hesitate to touch anything unclean, be it an animal or a human being. What's wrong in that? It's their personal preference. Atleast better than touching a person and then calling him a primitive uncultured black...

:-)

Untouchability is being practised for centuries in India among Hindus only. It is now an offence. Government legislations cannot completely change the society and culture unless people themselves participate. Usually it is falsely alleged that it is prevailing in all religions without studying them. Christianity and Islam treat all human beings equal without discrimination of caste, color or creed. Hinduism is not a religion. It is a culture, customs, tradition, etc.
Copied below is translation of verses 40-47 Chapter-18 of The Holy Bhagavad Gita:

There is no being existing on the Earth, in the celestial spheres or in any universal planetary system which is free from the influence of these three modes of born of material nature. O Arjuna, the activities of the brahmanas, ksatriyas, vaisyas and sudras are clearly divided according to the qualities born of their own nature. The actions of a brahmana arising from his own nature are serenity, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge of the Vadas, wisdom and firm faith. The actions of a Ksatriya born of his own nature are heroism, exuberance, determination, resourcefulness, without trace of cowardice in battle, generosity and leadership. The actions of a vaisya born of his own nature are agriculture, cow protection and trade, also the actions of a sudra born of his own nature consists in service to brahmanas, ksatriyas and vaisyas. Following each his own activity, a man achieves finally perfection, now hear how he performer of action prescribed according to qualification attains perfection. From whom is the existence of all living entities, by whom all this is pervaded, through worshipping Him, by ones own actions prescribed according to qualification a man achieves perfection. Ones righteous duty imperfectly done is better than another’s duty done perfectly; by performing actions predicated according to ones own nature sinful one does not incur sinful reactions. Actions prescribed according to ones nature must not be given up. O Arjuna, even if defective; since all endeavors are covered with defects as fire is covered by smoke.

Thus human beings are divided in 4 varnas and hundreds of castes therein. A Hindu's prayers and worships are the job of his caste he born by nature. If he opts a job of other caste, he is a sinner. Unfortunately the untouchables do not come under any of these 4 varnas of human beings hence treated as such by Hinduism culture, customs and tradition; though very inhuman in others' view.
