Whether waves are transverse (up and down movement), longitudinal (back and forth movement, also called compression), or surface (circular or elliptical movement—a combination of transverse and longitudinal), all waves can exhibit common behaviors:

refraction (speed and direction changes when interacting with a
...new medium);

diffraction (bends around a barrier);

reflection (bounces off a barrier);

interference (superposition, summation of more than one wave);

*rectilinear propagation (move in a straight line); and

dispersion ( splitting up by frequency).

*Rectilinear propagation may not hold for electromagnetic waves. The jury is still out....It's kind of like the y in the statement, "Vowels include a, e, i, o, u and sometimes y. See source.*

Usually waves exhibit good behavior, but once in a while, like when one is experiencing an exploding hydrogen bomb, the waves kind of gang up on ya. =)

waves behave differently but ,always like waves. The reply seems more clear than the question I believe.
