Freedom is of the mind and not the body. What these writers have in common is that they are all dead men living in another time and place but they had great insight in the human condition.
Your culture keeps changing with the economic development of the West. The world hates a void and whe one culture fades another will take its place. America is only a couple hundred years old and has not passed the test of time. Give the Euro a time and they will hang themselves in the end. The far East will control the world the next 50 years. Population explosian.

I know that G. Bernard Shaw has been of this opinion in many of his plays. But to analyse this we have to go back in time, in the 19th century England. Infact It was not only Shaw but others as well who thought like this about the culture and freedom. The same is the case with India now. It shows that now we are facing the same conditions what western country have already faced and that is why, You, an Indian has the same question what they had few decades back.
