The sun will grow in size, but reduce in mass, so all the planets will move out into new orbits, Mercury and Venus will be consumed, Earth will roast, if not also being consumed, and the oceans will boil. We need to learn how to live and work in space and on other planets and moons, or we will become extinct, so that should be a sufficient answer to those who say all the money spent on space research is wasted, and would be better spent on the needy. It is only a tiny fraction of the amount spent on the Defence budget, and getting cut back further! Well, it's not my descendants who will die, but it could be yours! The sun will expand to such a large size that it will consume the entire solar system. Not to worry--it's highly unlikely that it will happen in our llifetimes.
