Do we have the technology to stop an asteroid from destroying earth?

If so, can someone explain some of the things that maybe NASA or our Government has in plan for an event like this?

Yeah NASA has come up with an idea which hasnt been proved yet.Its phenomenon is to place a huge object in the way of an asteriod so that this huge impact can distract the speed and movement of an asteriod.This impact will reduce its speed and may miss its shot on earth and hit elsewhere.

why would we want that, when we already have the technology to destroy Earth ourselves.

No, we currently do not have such technology.
