I'm trying to change from an Nvidia Geforce 5200 (I think) to a Radeon 5500. I plugged it in and windows wouldnt load - i rechecked it, replugged it in and still nothing, basically i get the windows loading page and no more. The old video card still works. Anyone know any reason why? Oh and I installed the drivers etc with the manufacturers disk while using the old card.

ah just to point out, i originally hadnt installed the new drivers etc, i did that after the new card hadnt worked originally. Thanks for the advice so far, ill try uninstalling the nvidia drivers and the radeon drivers. Just to check, once ive done that (assuming the new card still doesnt work) will the pc still be able to use the old card?

I guess you did not read instructions, that is if you bought the Radeon 5500. See if you can return it. Get the Geforce FX 5500 OC. 256 Mb. That is the fastest card for the PCI, which I presume you have. Just to let you know.

First go to "control panel", "display", "hardware", "device manager", then click "display adaptors". When you click on DISPLAY ADAPTORS, you right click whatever video cards you have there and disable them.

Then you reboot. Take out old card, put in new card, load up driver, and then reboot again. See if this works. Go to DISPLAY ADAPTORS to check to see if your card is listed there.

You have to do this in a certain way now like this. Example you could not load up a driver if the old one is still there. There will be a conflice and the new one may not take effect. You can only have one driver now.

If you have any more problems, just Email me, but tell me what you did and what help you need, reason is I do not keep track. I get email saying they need help with their computer and I do not look up the question the person asked.

That is probably the problem you have got, installing the new drivers before putting in the new card, boot up with old card, uninstall the new drivers for the radeon, uninstall old nvidia drivers then turn off PC, put new card in let it boot up, windows will recognise new card and from there you will be able to install the new card drivers, all you have done is caused a conflict with the old and new drivers. good luck.

Since ATI's website is delightfully vague on anything older than the 7000 line, we need to know what kind of slot we are using. Is it PCI or AGP?

If PCI, you can use an open slot and configure BOTH cards simultaneously. Use both in Windows, and when they both work, unplug the old one and plug in the new one in it's space.

Honestly if it's PCI, and you can't use AGP, you seriously need to start saving some money: you will need to get a new computer in the next two years. Windows XP Extended Support will begin in 2010, and no more drivers, hardware or tech support will be available for it past then (System updates will continue until 2014). If you're using Windows 2000, it's in extended support now: Microsoft exausts the Windows 2000 lifecycle entirely in 2009 (no system updates or help of any kind).

If AGP, we need some other details:

-- How many notches does the card have? (One or two.)
-- How many notches does the AGP Slot have? (One, Two or None.)
-- Is the AGP Slot longer than the card that goes in it? (AGP Pro)
-- What is the make and model of your current motherboard?

If it's AGP, knowing those four questions would help greatly.

I don't think its a good idea to install the new drivers with the old card still plugged in. I would reccomend removing that driver then swithc off, change cards and boot up windows. This way you should get the new hardware detected message and you should be able to install your drivers then.

Another thing you could try would be safe mode, although I forget how to get into it.

Good luck

uninstall gforse drivers and software. they will conflict because the drivers are trying to read gforce and not eccept the radeon. uninstall the radeon drivers too untill the compter has accepted the new hard ware. you are double confusing the system
