Yeah, it makes you look youthful and sexy and healthy and vibrant WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG. You will not be young forever, trust me. People who've gotten lots of sun when younger look old faster than those who were smart and either avoided the sun or used a good sunblock. Dry, leathery, crinkly, skin by the time you're 35 is not sexy. Didn't you see the movie "There's Something About Mary"? As for the Vit. D, you can get that in a tablet. I agree that tanned skin looks great, but go the bottle route, and for G*d's sake, stay out of the tanning booths.

Because if you didn't know already, cases of melanoma have increased significantly over the last 20 years. You do NOT need a tan to get a sufficient about of vitamin D. All you need is to spend a few minutes in the sun each day. Your body only needs enough vitamin D so that it can absorb calcium. That is NOT an excuse for getting a sun tan, which by the way is considered to be SKIN DAMAGE by dermatologists. And skin damage is what leads to PREMATURE AGEING and further down the road, incidences of SKIN CANCERS such as basal cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma.
It may look sexy at first, but when those wrinkles start forming and you look 50 when you are 30, you might think differently. Tanning is addictive, because that initial tan plumps up the skin and leaves you with a sunkissed look. But with every exposure, more and more damage builds up in the deeper layers of skin. Maybe you should see a dermatologist and ask for a uv photo just to see how much damage has accumulated already. It might make you feel differently.
If you want to stay looking youthful and sexy, then DON'T sunbathe and always use a high factor sunblock when out in the sun, even on cloudy days. Take it from someone who's been unfortunate enough to learn the hard way.
Take care : )

It's true that all the above are the benefits of the sun, I like to get a little, it lifts your mood also.
Unfortunately too much sun exposure without protection will rapidly age your skin and can cause skin cancer, that's just the simple truth. Use an SPF of over 15, 25 if you're fair. Stay out of intense sun between 11am and 3pm, protect your eyes, and you can enjoy a bit of sun.
I'm in my 30s and I definitely got too much sun in my teens and early 20s and although i have olive skin I can really see where the sun damage is on my face and hands already. I use a high SPF sun creamnow at all times whatever the weather.
I use a good tanning cream to get that 'glow' now it's just not worth the damage, if you are young, please take my advice, don't get too much you will regret it.

People say things because on an avergae you will find that 99% of people are not very satisifed with their body, whatever it be, say looks, height, figure, etc
Sun is very important for many reasons as you've stated but there are people having sensititve skin and even a little exposure to the sun can damamge their skin.
Moreover you'll find most of the people wanting a fair skin which is not possible if you are tanned.

sorry but no I have just had a lump cut out of my face too much sun ----yachting ---lucky it was not malignant and is not growing back. A relative has had lesions burnt off his hand too much sun -golf .--- a friend and previously very attractive model is suffering from early wrinkles and very dry skin in her 30's from sun bathing ---so from all these happenings I am not going for a tanned skin ---- far better to stay white than to have these problems and living in a very hot sunny country there can be even worse problems our warnings and health adverts is to wear protective clothes wear hats rub on thickly and often sun screen protection cream and just stay out of the sun at the hottest part of day as skin cancer does kill and really quickly so do you want to take the chance ????----- having lumps removed or burnt off does not happen without pain ----- our polluted air does not filter out the sun's damaging rays so take more care of your skin and not live to regret having a wonderful tan which is not healthy -----no way!!!!!!in the past we did not understand the damage now we do as there is lots of proof so wisen up and cover up before it is too late

Yes! the sun is good for you but to much is Not.
sun bathing over a long period of time can cause cancer and even if you want to look sexy with a nice tan if you get skin cancer you won't be sexy any more. Not only is it deadly it looks horrible. And over the long term, if you avoid to much sun you will look youth full longer.....

It is good for you- in moderation.
How much is good for a person is related to how much melanin you have in your skin.
People with more melanin (a deeper color, more pigment) have to stay in the sun longer to experience the vitamin D benefit. ( Ever wonder why U.S. milk is fortified with vitamin D? It is to provide extra 'D' in climates that are less sunny!)
People with little melanin are more prone to skin cancers and the effects of photo-aging because the pigment acts like a natural sunscreen.
But, while over exposure to the sun causes skin damage, so does smoking, eating poorly, and not taking care of your skin.
So maybe the sun is taking the rap for other factors as well?
