The flag you showed is Ensign of the Imperial Japanese Navy. it's called 旭日旗 (kyokujitsuki) in Japanese.

The countries that were invaded by Japan really hate it. And some Japanese who were struggling to survive in World War II also hate it.

I strongly suggest you shouldn't use it. See the following site for the details.

The current Japanese flag is called the Hinomaru (the red circle on a white background). The flag that you want to use is a flag that was used prior to WWII, and after looking at that site, I wouldn't use it just because that particular flag is seen as almost the symbol of WWII. I suppose the closest thing that I could parallel it with is the confederate flag and the kinds of feelings it stirs up when seen in the US.

It is called the hinomaru or circle of the sun in English translation. If memory serves me correct (im half Japanese or nihon) we do not use that flag anymore since World War II ended. It was a symbol of war and pretty much represents the days of the Emperor.

Despite what you're hearing, it's not the hinomaru.

This flag was used by the Imperial Japanese Navy and is now associated with right-wingers.

It's a symbol of racial intolerance: Putting it on your site would be like an African-American putting a Ku Klux Klan ensignia on his or her site.

BTW, I love the ignorant people who are giving me the thumbs down for pointing this out. It's simple enough to see whether I'm right: Google it.

The Japanese flag is called Hinomaru (circle of the sun). The red circle on the white background symbolizes the sun.

its a ww2 flag of the japanese army and navy. but it is called nisshoki which means rising-sun flag. it is also called hinomaru which means disk of the sun or nihon no kokki which means flag of japan. anyways the national flag is a big red circle(the sun) in the middle against a white background.

because the previous 2 solutions reported, they are stated as sashimono and they certainly were used to rapidly locate squaddies on the battlefield. some yoroi (samurai armor) had a bracket and slot fixed down the middle of the backbone section that replaced into meant to carry the sashimono.

You might want to look a little more closely at the history of that flag before using it on your site.

It's connotations are not much different than the Nazi swastika.
