It depends on how old your computer is. Your computer may not be powerful enough to run them at a decent speed. I'm assuming that one of the emulators you are using is VisualBoy Advance. In the Options menu, go to Frame Skip and set to 9. Also, go to Throttle and select a speed, up to 200 percent, or click other and enter 1000 percent. This will make the game try to run as fast as possible, with some possible loss of quality. I personally prefer the speed to be 200 percent or faster for Pokemon battles, because they seem to draw out for a long time.

Also, try to download a copy of the GBA BIOS. This may help the performance somewhat, although it is not guaranteed. My computer is about 6 years old, and I cannot currently play FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald, Sapphire, and any other games later than Pokemon Crystal at a decent speed. This is because they require far more memory and processing power than GBC games do.

I don't know about FireRed, but I am familiar with the problem with Sapphire. It occurs in these games because the battery is not emulated correctly in these games. There is nothing you can do about it, and it happens to everybody who tries to play them.

Well your processor may be old or slow. Or you could have a bad graphic card.

Try taking your computer to a place where they can upgrade your processor and graphic card.

They have yet to effect my mac! As they don't really use much power. Just be careful with where you download the games!.
