The direct answer to your question is that YOU feel pointless when you are not respected. This has nothing to do with the work being hard or to do with the respect you don't "receive." It has everything to do with your hunger for recognition.
The point is this, if you respect yourself you have no need to be recognized. You will feel less frustrated when you look at other peoples' behavior as just that, how they behave, and it has nothing to do with you. Unless they make a personal attack, don't take it personally.
If you insist on signs of respect you are trying to control another's behavior. And anyway, you will never have all the respect you want.
In your work, it is insufficient just to satisfy another person's need. If you spend too much time doing that you forget your own needs, loose your identity and become a workaholic. Hard work is pointless unless you appreciate yourself and the integrity you bring to the task.
If you are not used to it, this is hard to do. These ideas are also hard to communicate and I would not be surprised if you find them difficult to accept. The problem is that most of us have been taught poorly at home and in school to respect others, especially our teachers, with little or no emphasis on the individual's self-respect.
To change your orientation is hard work and it is not pointless.
