It'll be a long time before a machine will be able to pass the Turing test let alone be graced with emotions. When that happens and we decide to put a human shell around it the only thing left for us will be to find a place to lay down and die. We have enough problems interacting with humans. As was pointed out in the anime, for some people its much easier to commit to a machine, that you can erase it's memory without any guilt, than to be in a normal relationship. What would happen to a society that no longer felt the need to interact with itself? Can you hear Mr. Huxley calling?

Actually, given the limited sexual access that computer geeks have (unless they are RICH), I'd say that should the technology ever become practical, there WILL be Persocoms like Chii around.

In fact, we'll be lucky if we don't destroy our entire world within the next 20 years. We need to remember that while fantasy is fine and dandy for entertainment....
