fear of terrorism... sigh... the truth is, the americans are the biggest terrorists out there. so yeah, the issue of the erosion of fundamental american rights is redundant as they are causing the problem.

Terrorism has put USA on overkill. The precautions taken are aimed at all the wrong points. Because of 9/11 it is assumed that attacks will be only aimed at aircraft. All countries are in danger so the need is to work together and gather all data about all travellers. Passports are going to embassies for Visa approvals. With good open co-operation each person's security rating can be determined. If there is a doubt it can be verified in advance. This does not create hassles while travelling as well as does not put unnecessary burden on security staff who can react pretty rudely in minor matters.
Privacy is a concern but today advanced encrytion can take care of it and can have sufficient layers to ensure safety.

Yes.There is a special clause that allows the Director of the FBI to request phone records for a person without ever notifying the person. For all other searches, the person must be notified, but not necessarily before the search. This is just a small portion of the Patriot Act of which I find the name to be an oxymoron.

If Americans had more grit and less fat the terrorist cause would slip in the left over grease and bust their arss and everyone would be happier and healthier as a result.
