my husband and I are arguing this because it is at a private school and it is not cheap, but she wants to do it soooo bad and I think that it would give her the incentive to want to do better in school so that she could be a cheerleader...

Usually if you want to stay on the cheerleading squad, you have to maintain a certain grade point average in order to cheer. At least that's how it is at my daughter's school. Anything below a C, and you don't cheer. If you keep it up, then, you are off the team. So, that would defiantly be a good incentive for her to work on her grades. Or you could stipulate that rule yourself. Plus, belonging to a team sport, and I do mean sport, teaches team work, self worth, and responsibility. So, I would let her try and make sure she knows that in order to keep participating, she needs to make sure her grades are within good standing.

I think that you are right that this may be the push she will need to make the grades. I would let her try out and encourage her to do well. Let her know that the only way you will let her stay in cheerleading is if she keeps her grades up. Private schools are not cheap and that if she can not do so that you will have to take her out of cheerleading and will not allow her to start another sport til she can understand that her grades are 1st!! This will fun for her and give opportunity to meet other people. Let her know that she could make this a school career all the way thru to college. Good luck.

I would tell her that she has to improve her grades first. If her grades can be improved through effort, then she should show that. If she can't improve her grades, she's going to have a big problem anyway, and you should find that out now. She can do as many things as she wants as long as her grades are good. One thing to do is focus on the grades that are bad, talk to the teachers, find out what her weaknessess are (quizzes, homework, what?) and you let her take the lead in making a written plan for how to improve in those areas. Then when she comes home, she has to work on those things in plain view. Right where you can see her. Then you will know that she's spending an hour or more studying every day. Don't leave it up to her so that she does her studying in her room behind closed doors!

Ok Well Tell her if that is what she really wants, let her try out. But tell her that if her grades dont improve ( or stay above a "c" or something). Take her out of cheerleading. Let her know grades are VERY important
Hope That Helps!

Do you know anything about the squad requirements?
Does she need to tumble? (probably) a back handspring is a requirement on most squads in Georgia. But some less competitive places don't require tumbling. Most I know of require splits.
see site below for a lot of information
Cheerleading is not just a bunch of cute girls any more. They are athletes. they run and lift weights and have special tumbling coaches. I was the capt. at a major university in the 80's and I had trouble getting some of the girls to do anything like push ups and lifting. Usually now it is required.
and did I mention that its a lot of fun and a great way to stay in shape?

Most schools have a good policy that cheerleaders must maintain a certain average grade so that might help to keep her grades up.

Let her try out. There are probably requirements for grades and it might be the incentive she needs to get GPA up.
