Animals break down rock and soil in two major ways - physically and chemically. Physically, animals that burrow can break up the structure of the soil and this allows moisture to creep into the soil and thence to the bedrock. Such animals as badgers, rabbits, foxes, snakes, meerkats, moles, and smaller ones such as ants, beetles, spiders are examples. Chemically, animals produce waste which are organic acids which can corrode rocks. And when the animals die, as they rot, they produce more organic acid which does the same.
