How many television channels are there in USA?

I'm doing an assignment on the broadcasting system in USA. I want to know how many televesion channels and different cable TVs there are and what kind of channels they offer.

Some of the cable channels that we have (HBO comes to mind)
have a few of the same channels that
1. come on and different times
2. show the same things in spanish

Do these count as different channels?
Also in our local cable lineup there are 'local' stations that have a 3 county radius.
They remind me of am radio ham stations in the sense that there is no (apparent) sensor or monitor.
how do you count these?
is it too late to pick another assignment?

non cable channels? there are a lot and it varies from city to city.
cable channels.. theres more, a lot more. most of the cable boxes are capable of going to 999 but most channels ease off at about 600.
the variety of programing is wide, anything really, sci-fi channel (science fiction shows), discover channel (educational), the history channel, the womens network, cooking channel, weather channel, animal planet... and on and on.
some channels you pay more for only show movies all day, like one channel only plays action movies and one channel only plays kids movies.
you should probably search the internet for a list.
