Advantages: Tests can show how much knowledge an individual can retain and regurgitate, and how good of a memory they have. They can also indicate how well someone understands what they are learning.

Disadvantages: Tests only show how much a person can remember, and often times people get nervous when writing them and forget things they normally know well. They limit peoples ability to demonstrate their knowledge with pointed questions (unless they are essay questions of course) and put a lot of people with bad short term memories at a disadvantage. It often happens that students who are brilliant in seminars or classes do rather poorly when it comes to written tests.
