Sounds like a damp and condensation problem. This will occur more in winter as the engine block is cold and the mild damp air condenses in the form of minute drops of water on all components. This stops the smooth transfer of charge from the battery as the moisture causes it it track to earth. Going back a few years when cars were less sophisticated and mine had to be left outside I put an old blanket under the bonnet when arriving home as, I thought at the time, a means of absorbing any moisture around. This seemed to work quite well but you must remember to take it out of the engine compartment before starting up in the morning. Best of luck.

can you hear the control box click after ign has been turned on for about 45 seconds. if not use a jumper lead from the battery + to the heater plug rail for 30 seconds remove and get assistant to start car. if it now starts you have u/s control box or possible faulty ign switch. if not check inhibitor wire from pump to control box is making contact and not broken. do compression test + check hyd taps, if it is a Opel DTL low blow turbo engine, not the Isuzu engine, they suffer from glazed bores, Morris Ambesta Glaze Buster oil is available, [The Engine Rebuilder September 2004] (treat one tankfull of fuel at a ratio of 50 to 1, failing that, glaze bust the bores with a hone and fit new rings, perform a cylinder leakage test first, to ascertain where the loss is going to. I;e past the rings or the valves. the compression test of DTL engine should indicate presures in the region of 400 PSI. as the compression ratio is 22 to 1 producing 67 BHP @ 4500 RPM.

Look for an air leak in the fuel filter cannister or in the line from the tank through to the injector pump. If it starts with quite a bit of white smoke then this is a probable fault. Get a bit of air in the injector pump and the injectors dribble fuel instead of spraying it till the air is cleared.

it sounds like it is dragging in air when it is left standing. The cheapest thing to do is replace the leak of pipes although that is probably not the problem. If the car has done over 120000 ish then the problem sounds like the injector seals, they are not expensive to buy and if you shop around then you should be able to get it done for about £250-£300.

I had this problem a few years ago and although the alternator was checked and was definitely charging the battery, it turned out that it was draining it overnight so I had to have a switch fitted to turn it off overnight and back on in the morning. This was an old VW.

the solution will cost you about £3.00. have you changed the bleed off pipes between the injectors? i would say that this is probably 99% your problem, if you take it to be diagnosed you will be told its pump failiure and all sorts of rubbish, the plastic becomes rigid instead of remaining flexible which causes cracks, over time cracks get bigger, car struggles to start because it is sucking much to much air! also change the pipe from pump to injectors. About a 15 minute job in total, it will fix the problem!.

If you're sure the glowplugs work correctly (see Mick W), then I'd agree it's drawing air in somewhere, allowing the fuel to drain back overnight and it's struggling to get fuel to the injectors.
