I disagree that grunge is dead. It has simply taken on another form like many other forms of music which were dominant once and now sit in the back benches waiting for a revival.
Currently the most notable figures in grunge are Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam and Chris Cornell from Audioslave.
There is of course always Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins too which i heard rumoured will be making a comeback sometime?
I suppose to some degree we have to say that Courtney Love is the queen of grunge since she did front a grunge band called Hole which had 2 decent albums even though the albums were rumoured to be written mostly by Kurdt Cobain and Billy Corgan.
End of the day with grunge in its current form it would be better to look at pioneers who take the grunge concept to new levels to find a leader....bands likes Boysetsfire,AFI,Hell is for Heroes,Rise Against and Story of The Year all show traces of grunge wrapped in a more updated package.

Funny, when they tried to pin grunge sound on Eddie Vedder, he passed his nod back to Neil Young. So I would say Neil Young...as the Grandfather of Grunge.
If you want an "official" answer, and have satellite TV with VH1 Classic, check out the 10part documentaries. "The History of Rock and Roll." They are playing them all day today, that is Mon Feb 19.
It will be somewhere toward the end. The first three only got as far as the Beatles, Stones, Mamas and Papas...start of the LA sound in the 60's. Then there will be the hippies, disco, punks, and the early early underground rap scene. And then we will hear about modern day rock music. I have seen these all before, but this time I get to DVR it. Well worth the drive space. I love rock docs.
Anyway, they have been talking a LOT about groundbreakers and innovators, and how new music morphed from older music as a throwback to earlier stuff. And how every once in a while it all gets distilled and something fresh comes out of very stale times...such as when grunge kicked out spandex in favor of flannel.

Kurt Cobain didn't invent grunge, he just made it mainstream.
But I don't think their is a "leader" of grunge. We are now in the age of post-grunge, since true grunge died with Kurt. But Pearl Jam is probably what I would say the "leader" of grunge is.

A lot of music by Seether is grunge, and they are the new Kings of Grunge in my eyes. Nirvana may not have started the grunge movement but when anyone thinks of grunge rock they think of nirvana and, consequently, Kurt Cobain. No type of music ever dies, sometimes it just goes undercover. Later!

Yeah, I saw that documentary - it was called 'The Last 48 Hours of Kurt Cobain'........so why did we get his entire life story?
As for the 'original leader of grunge' - as someone else mentioned, check out Neil Young circa 1978!

I don't think there is grunge like it was in the day of Kurt Cobain, and the Pearl Jam era....that music was awesome when it was hot, but the rap scene has gotten to most of the kids it seems these days. Blue grass is really popular with the college kids, and stuff like Wide Spread Panic seems to be the "grungiest" we have these days, to me anyway.......

Hmm, good question! To be perfectly honest, I can't name any current 'grunge' bands! I think 'grunge' really only existed for a certain time in history (ie. the mid 1990s), then kind of morphed into other genres. But I could be wrong. Anyone?

Actually The Pixies invented grunge. The BBC gets it wrong again, surprise, surprise. There is no new leader, just many bands influenced by grunge.

Grunge music is no more ;-(
Well, if grunge is still around...its either Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) or Chris Cornell (Ex-SoundGarden) that deserve to b the leader
