svhost.exe is a process which is registered as the W32.Mydoom.I@mm worm. This virus is distributed via the Internet through e-mail and comes in the form of an e-mail message, in the hopes that you open its hostile attachment. The worm has its own SMTP engine which means it gathers E-mails from your local computer and re-distributes itself. In worst cases this worm can allow attackers to access your computer, stealing passwords and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system.

Recommendation for svhost.exe:
DISABLE AND REMOVE svhost.exe IMMEDIATELY. This process is most likely a virus or trojan.

Hi there,

The REAL answer here is that it COULD be a virus, but then it COULD ALSO be a legitimate file within windows. It all depends on WHERE the file is located on your computer.

For example, here's a list of known SVHOST.EXE's:
http://spywarefiles.prevx.com/ssDGCJ1875/SVHOmore.html

The majority of them are bad, malicious files used by numerous malware infections, whereas a handful of them are genuine good files.

Without research it can be difficult to determine manually which is a good and legitimate file as opposed to a bad and malicious one. The best and easiest way to check this is by running a security program that can analyse the actual file behaviour and see whether its intentions are good or bad.

Many should be able to do this, but I would recommend the Free Trial of Prevx1 which will scan your PC and remove this and any other infections free of charge.
