I have a job offer for Tacoma, but I'd like to live in the suburbs of the city. Any suggestions?

Gig Harbor not crowded? PLEASE! Gig Harbor is full of people who want to work in Tacoma or Seattle but don't want to live in Tacoma or Seattle. In a few months the second bridge will be completed and a $3 toll will be put into effect for everyone who uses the bridge.

Urban sprawl has taken over the entire area surrounding Tacoma. It won't matter what suburb you move to, you WILL encounter traffic. Puyallup, Sumner, Spanaway, Graham, Yelm, Parkland, and Lakewood are all south of Tacoma. I-5,Pacific Ave (Hwy 7) and Meridian Ave (Hwy 161) are packed during rush hour, especially on Friday nights.

A lot of crime that was formerly in Tacoma has migrated to Lakewood and to some parts of Spanaway.

Federal Way is to the North and is in King County so you'll pay more for housing. Parts of Federal Way are nice, while others can be quite seedy.

Each suburb has something to offer and also has it's drawbacks.

Housing prices in this area have risen steadily the past several years. My husband and I live in Port Orchard (Kitsap County) and want to buy a house, but trying to find a decent 3 bed, 2 bath house in a good neighborhood for less than $300K is almost impossible. These same houses were going for $240-250K only 3 years ago.

I grew up in Tacoma when it used to be a "smallish" town. The Summit area is still really nice (some horses and cows) and located fairly close to downtown w/o driving thru too much traffic. If you don't want a rural feel, a lot of people like North Tacoma. Lots of old houses that have been restored and more of an "upscale" feel. If you go to Spanaway which is South of Tacoma, you will battle traffic constantly. There still is parts of Tacoma that you will like, just have to explore and talk to a local over there.

Gig Harbor and Federal Way are great suburbs to live in. They have a lot of old houses on the water and plenty of brand new ones at reasonable prices. The environment is nice, neighborhoods are friendly, and you can usually have a view of something whether it is Puget Sound or Mt. Rainer. There are also many attractions near these areas so you will have plenty to do. I would recommend Federal Way first if you have family. If it's just you or a spouse, Gig Harbor is where you want to be, but both communities are family oriented. Gig Harbor has a low crime rate and not crowded at all. Arts and entertainment are very important factors in both cities and are cultured like Seattle is.

I hope you enjoy living in the Pacific Northwest!

The best place is Gig Harbor -
put a High Rise Bridge between your Residence and that Tacoma Crime Ridden Area.

Since I grew up in the area I would have to tell you to check out Sumner. A short drive to Tacoma and a small town with a great downtown area, real good schools (the kids can walk there) and very, very low crime. Lots of older homes and real character.

Roy is a nice very small town. We lived in Spanaway and liked that, but some people don't.
