Well, most people will disagree but it's actually Windows XP.

Reasons:

1) Although you have a 64bit processor, and yes Vista can support 64bit, you won't find many applications / games that make use of 64bit processing yet and won't for some time.

2) Windows XP is a lot 'lighter' than Vista, and you'll find Vista will actually run slower unless you have 2GB or more of RAM. Even then, Windows XP will run faster.

3) Both XP and Vista can handle dual-core processors perfectly well, so if your thinking in terms of utilising both cores then it won't make any difference.

Note: The comment above saying Vista is newer and better is not true. I've used Vista for 4 months since beta and I still choose to use XP Pro (with SP2)... as that is better for gaming performance. You'll find that a lot of people using Vista will feel let down by performance at first. Until Microsoft release the first service pack for Vista (which will be in a few months), I don't think it's better yet.

Both optimise the processor. I have an AMD 4600 X2 running. XP and Vista in dual boot. You need the XP drivers from AMD to get the best out of it. Vista is is build it.
Vista does run my apps about 15% faster though.

Vista definatly optimizes for dual core processors more then XP.
Vista has far more native support for multi-thredding. But to be honest it will be a while before there are the applications available to make use of the support.

Windows vista includes the 32 and 64 bit on one dvd-rom. Windows xp has a 64 bit version you have to purchase separately.........the same reason i'm stuck on 32 bit and it still flies. They WERE giving exchanges for xp pro 64 bit. XP Home does NOT have a 64 bit version. Go with Vista.......its new and better. It soon will be required for most new games with direct x 10! Make sure you have a pci express graphics card with at least 512mb of ram. Vista has to be the home premium version at least.

For your processor, i think you better stick with XP. Vista works much better if you have multicore processors and 2GB of ram. Vista is better than XP in my opinion. When XP came out people said WinME was better heh. Dont be one of the followers

Use XP for now. Vista is in it's beta stage still. Not officially but Bill Gates releases it so he can find out what's wrong with it.

Use Linux with an SMP kernel. An SMP kernel is specifically designed to handle multiple processors.

neither one optimizes the processor unless the OS is a 64 bit.
