i handed in my resignation on monday 12 february. i told my director that i will work 4 weeks and my last working day will be 9 march. i do not have a contract, but thought i would work 4 weeks as we are already short staffed.
my other director is making it very difficult for me to work out my notice period. he is being very rude towards me, and he has taken it very personally that i resigned.
one of the reasons i resigned is that i am 8 weeks pregnant and the work enviroment is very high stress. the situation is so bad now, that i am more stressed now, than before i resigned. i cannot stay and work another 3 weeks as this will defeat the entire object of resigning.

what will be the best way, if any, to let my director know that i would like to leave at the end of the week, and not work out my notice period.

2 weeks is a standard notice for resignation but since you did leave a 4 week notice, your word needs to mean something. Unless you plan on never coming back again, you should try and honor your commitment. Try talking to your supervisor and let him know that the hostile work environment has become very stressful to you. Ask him if he wishes you to leave sooner. If he does not handle this situation professionally, you can always leave sooner but at the very least you made an effort to work things out.

It's illegal in the U.S. for your former employers to make derrogatory remarks about you.

I would advise that you put your position in writing and say as you are not under contract you are required to give only 1 weeks notice. (this is dependant on your length of service but I'm assuming you've under a years service?)

You gave this notice on 12th February advising that at the time it was your intention to give 4 weeks notice. You have found circumstances have changed since you have given your notice and therefore you will be rescinding your offer to work 4 times the required notice and will instead only be working 2 weeks notice.

It won't hurt if you mention that you are pregnant and therefore your priority is the wellbeing of your baby and at the moment you find the situation untenable and are concerned for your health.

In any event, even if you leave today they will be required to pay you everything you have earned and any accrued holiday. Your only risk could be a future reference as they may mention that you changed your mind about your notice period, I wouldn't be too concerned about this though as you have given what you are legally obliged to give.

Good luck with it.

Let your director know that you need to leave before the date you noted in your letter. Since you aren't under a contract, you are not obligated to stay at your post for any amount of time.

However, if you decide to use that employer as a reference, it is possible that they hold a grudge against you and do not recommend you to a new job.
