It seems like your e-mail you used as a Windows Live ID is already connected to a Gamertag.
Instead of creating a new Tag, you should choose to retrieve that gamertag from Xbox Live.

This has nothing to do with gold or silver. It just means, that you (or someone who uses your Live ID e-Mail adress) already linked this adress to a Gamertag, and you can only retrieve this tag from Xbox Live, not create a new one.

Yeah all you need to do is make sure that your xbox is either wirelessly or hard wired to the internet. Once you have established a connection you will do a simple walkthrough while starting up and establishing an online id. there may be some information you might want to have handy...make sure you know where to get your ip address, mac address and probably a few other codes from your internet connection in order to establish a connection via xbox.
also, they may ask for a credit card number and expiration date and so fourth. i don't know if they will if you are setting up a silver account. it's just i automatically signed up for gold and had to enter this information. once entered, it will remain on file so that when you do sign up for gold or add microsoft points you will not have to enter this information again.

enjoy your 360.

have you already made an account or are you trying to start a new one? try starting a new account with a new screenname through the xbox not your pc. maybe you chose one that is already in use.
