No, it's an acid. In order for it to be a salt, it would need to have 2 neutral ions (ie not H+ or OH-). Reacting an acid and a base forms a salt and water. (ie C6H5COOH + NaOH --> NaC6H5COO +H2O... where sodium benzoate (NaC6H5COO) is the salt)

HISTORICAL NOTES
In the XVII century, a great philosopher (R. Dèscartes, well-known as Cartesius) noted in his writings that the term ACID derived by Latin word "acetum" (e.g. it means vinegar) used to define many sour stuffs.
Some decades later, an irish scientist (R. Boyle, british gentleman) executed many and many experiences on chemical stuffs known at the time. He reported a first collection stating in this manner the former important classification of chemicals. He used its human senses even, e.g. taste :"..acid have a sour taste while bases have a sweet one...".
Thus, international community found "Acid's Class", "Base's Class" and "Salt's Class".

YOUR REMARKS
You can put some spoons of Benzoic Acid (e.g. it appears as white needles) in a melting pot, hence you act with a burner's flame on it.
You must avoid air's streams which may blows up the acidic stuff. Don't cover the pot since you must avoid tar-formations.
When you join at the end, the acidic stuff is disappeared.
IT IS NOT A SALT!
Another small amount of acidic stuff is dosed to your
organo-leptic experiences : if you taste it, you note a sour nature.
IT SHOWS A SOUR NATURE!
An ultimate small amount of the stuff is dipped in an aqueous alkaline solution : its needles disappear very fastly.
IT BEHAVES LIKE AN ACID!

I hope this helps you.
