Turning the key was a fail safe that Dharma put there in case something went wrong with the computer. It was created to disperse all the magnetic energy once and for all. They weren't sure if it would work and what would happened if they did it so that's why it was only a last resort.
p.s. also in theory it may have destroyed the shield that made the island invisible to the rest of the world. That would explain how Des' girl was able to located it.

Well, a lot about the hatch is still just based on spectulation. I am assuming that because Desmond used the fail safe key, there is no longer any need to push a button. Desmond waited so long to use the key though because he didn't know what would happen when it was turned or if he would even live through it. As for what he prevents from happening by turning it? One can only guess. The magnetic pull was extremely strong when that button was not pushed. What remains a mystery is how strong would it of become and how far would it's influence carry. And, since he likes to say that he was saving the world by pushing the button, I'm assuming that things would of gotten pretty bad pretty quick.

Yes it is all very confusing but I think (don't quote me on this) that when Desmond turned the key in the hatch it released all the energy at once( a fail safe device intended to be used if someone failed to type in the numbers or if the computer was permanently damaged), hence the noise, and now they no longer have to type in the numbers into the computer, which of course is smashed to bits, Desmond only turned the key as a last result when the place started shaking as intially he and Locke thought the typing in of numbers routine was a con/ load of rubbish, but when things starting shaking etc, and locke realised he'd made a mistake, Desmond turned the key as a last resort in the hope that it would work and they wouldn't all be killed on the island, I presume the key device had never been proven to work before, hence no one previously wanted to risk resulting to that method unless absolutely appropriate, as for anything else thats going on in the show, your guess/theories are as good as mine!

I thought Desmond ended the whole problem of the magnetic field when he turned that key - but then I guess if he did - why didn't he do it years before at a time in between inputting the numbers (ie when the whole place wasn't collapsing around him?) He could have just switched off the whole process???
Having said that I am totally addicted to Lost - I LOVE trying to work it all out - and usually failing.

The key was an override to the entering of the numbers on the computer, but you are right to ask how are they "pushing the button" if the computer is smashed.
