You may be low on antifreeze and the noise may be from the air getting purged from the heater core

In-house mechanics tell me you need to warm the Chevy motor
more and don't worry about it. The '96 Chevy has problems but
like Ford somebody is keeping auto mechanics busy each day.

these trucks (95-99) 4.3 vortec commonly have injector problems( leak) and lower in take leaks.
