Id check if you can get international roaming put on your phone if you are not planning on using your phone much in London.

If you are, then getting a prepaid sim is a very good idea.

By far the cheapest is from Tesco mobile. Tesco is the UK's version of Coles/Woolies, you can purchase them in any of their supermarkets, the sim costs £5 and comes with some credit. From there you can top it up at any store, online, or over the phone. very very easy to use, its what i started with when i first came to london, and its been so good and cheap, two years later im still using them! Plus, the best feature is that it will only cost you 20p per text or 20p a minute to call Australia form your mobile, landline or mobile! and while you are in the UK, only 10p per minute to call any UK mobile or landline, and 10p per text. plus you get to set your three fav UK numbers and you get half price calls and texts to those numbers so its even cheaper!

Have fun in london matey!

You can buy a number of prepaid phones here in the US before leaving for the UK, but there might be an easier option.

a) do you have a GSM phone and b) is it unlocked. Cingular and T-mobile are 2 of the biggest GSM carriers in the US, so if you have them you are looking good. The second thing you need to do is get it unlocked, meaning the phone can work with a different SIM card then the one it came with. T-Mobile will do this over the phone. Cingular is a different story. (Verizon uses a different standard).

If you have an unlocked phone, you can buy a SIM card when you land in the UK and slide it in your phone and make calls from a UK phone number. You can 'top up' (add value) to your phone at 1,000s of places all over the UK.

02 and Virgin are two of the biggest carriers over there. You can also check out Orange. When you get to the UK, look for a Carphonewarehouse or a Dixons on nearly any street corner and they can get you sorted out.

If you are taking a laptop, you should download Skype and get 'Skype In' and 'Skype Out' capability and just make phone calls over Skype (assuming your hotel has Internet).

I just went to london and bought a 5 pound card with 180 minutes for international calls, but you have to call from a free phone.

you can buy them from internet cafes near oxford street.

I hope it helps...

You probably won't be able to get one just for a week....?

It is usually a year long contract if you are talking about what i think you are..
