Greatest Guitarist Alumni: Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett and the list goes on and on. They were all great 'cause there styles were groundbreaking for their time. There's no way a person could single one person out, no way.

These are the guys after whom the guitar was not the same anymore, more or less in the chronological order:
Django Reinhardt
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Robert Fripp
Pat Metheny
Steve Vai
Nobody else really comes near.
My additional favorite is not revolutionary, but is really amazing, Jake Cinninger of Umphrey's McGee.

James Taylor...a unique style with great fingerwork, my very fav, and one of the few acoustic players on my list!
Steve Howe...a virtuoso, melodic, supportive group member
Jimmy Page...very innovative
Eric Clapton...made his guitar sing, very versatile.
BB King...a pioneer, minimalist makes every note count
Stevie Ray Vaughn...his guitar just seems to talk!
Chet Atkins...blew open the country music guitar sound
Eddie Van Halen...great riffs
Yngwie Malmsteen probably spelled it wrong...a genius!
Jeff Beck...another melodic minimalist player, good collaborator
Chuck Berry...innovative and groundbreaking
Keith Richards...rowdy and wonderful
Carlos Santana...very soulful playing, I love to watch him.
Slash...great riffing, power solos yet simple
Mark Knopfler...sweet jazzy soul, good collaborator
Ricky Skaggs...a huge country talent, bluegrass roots player
The Edge...haunting and simple, very emotional player
There's probably more. I'm not a Hendrix fan but he sure did some crazy innovative stuff.
Who else? Well, I'm sure I have forgotten plenty.

For my money it's Bruce Cockburn. His acoustic playing is so fluid and versatile, and he uses jazz phrasings that move & involve me in the song. He's Canadian and has done what I guess you'd call an Urban Folk style for over 30 years...not nearly enuf in USA know about him. Do yourself a favor and check out his latest on Rounder Records, Life Short Call Now.

Well, Jimi Hendrix for sure! Just soooooo good! I also love his singing voice, but not many others are with me on that one! :)
I'm a huge Beatles fan, so I'd also have to say George Harrison (plus he taught himself the sitar - so cool!).
Jack Johnson - so easy on the ears, but so hard to actually play!
The Shins (don't know names, sorry) - so catchy and cool!

Elliott Smith by far; for his sophisticated scales, complex chord progressions, and overall originality; his music offers more than any musicians I've ever heard and he's my favourite musician, let alone GUITARIST, of all time.
