Any type of poultry, except broilers, roasters, and heavy turkeys, can live up to 10 + years if taken care of properly. But, the average life span is 4 - 6 years.

On an average 8 to 15 years. Breed does play a significant part in how long they live. Some chickens have been recorded to live 20 years and if memory serves me correctly the oldest chicken documented was 22 years old when it finally died. If you are getting chickens and you care for them properly a safe estimate is 12 years. But that also depends on the reason for having chickens. If for meat well they aren't going to be around long enough to worry. If it is for eggs you should bare in mind it is always good to replace your layers every 3 years. Hens will lay eggs throughout their life span but the older they get the fewer eggs they lay. I had a barred rock live for thirteen years and was laying 2 eggs a week.

It depends on how hungry you are!!

SORRY, couldn't resist saying that, don't mean to be insensitive. And, I'm doubly sorry to say I haven't a clue as to a chicken's normal life span.

Hope someone can give you the answer.
