by enigmatic band I mean Enigma, Gregorian, delerioum, Secret Garden etc....

"Enigmatis" are the Residents who've been playing for about 40 years now an no one has seen their faces or knows their names. The bands you're listing are Britney Spears-level pop only masked into scary synthesizers and reverbs and quasi-classical little tunes, just like Enya or Vangelis. But you're curious and not into stupid pop, so you deserve to cross to the next level of true art, and what you need to do is reserch the following bands/folks, iTunes can give you enough info:

and then follow the related links. Buy Mezanine by Massive Attack. And when you're done and used to it all, move to the temple of wisdom: Brian Eno - Neroli, and all his Ambienbts, and Discreet Music series, and Robert Fripp's Soundscapes.
