John F. Kennedy's 1963 assassination was one of the most shocking public events of the 20th century. Kennedy served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, commanding the patrol boat PT-109 and leading his crew to rescue after the boat was sunk by the Japanese in the Solomon Islands. A Democrat, "JFK" was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts' 11th district in 1946. In 1952 he moved up to the U.S. Senate, defeating Henry Cabot Lodge. He married Jacqueline Bouvier on 12 September 1953; they had two children, Caroline (b. 1957) and John Jr. (b. 1960). (A third child, Patrick, was born on 7 August 1963 and died two days later.) JFK was elected to replace President Dwight Eisenhower in 1960 (narrowly defeating Eisenhower's vice-president, Richard Nixon); he swept into office with a reputation for youthful charm, impatience, wit and vigor. Kennedy's term was sometimes called the New Frontier, a phrase he coined in his acceptance speech at the 1960 Democratic convention. Kennedy was shot to death by sniper Lee Harvey Oswald during an open-car motorcade in Dallas, Texas on 22 November 1963; two days later, Harvey was shot and killed by another man, Jack Ruby. Kennedy was succeeded by Lyndon Johnson.

There was a conspiracy, but Oswald may have killed Kennedy on his own anyway. The sound recordings, images, and ballistics data all support the conclusion of the Warren Commission. No real evidence to the contrary exists. There was a mysterious lack of security, there were strange connections, Oswald's life story is in some ways incredible, many witnesses and knowledgeable intelligence operatives died without telling all they knew, and a number of powerful actors had motives to have Kennedy killed and appear involved with individuals who played a role in Oswald's life or death. Many questions do not and will never have satisfactory answers. Oswald could have killed Kennedy alone, with that gun, that day. There is no solid evidence otherwise.

It was officially Lee Harvey Oswald, but I do not believe he was a lone gunman. I've read a lot of theories on conpiracies. The one I find most plausible is that it was orchestrated by the Mafia, specifically the New Orleans mob boss at that time, Carlos Marcello. Marcello had been kicked out of the country by Attorney General Robert Kennedy, but managed to get back in on a legal technicality. He hated the Kennedys. The father, Joe Kennedy, had had various unsavory dealings with the Mafia over the years, including getting "help" with the 1960 vote count in Chicago, which allowed John to win Illinois & the election by a slim margin over Nixon. The deal was supposed to be that the Kennedys would leave the Mafia alone, but instead, John unleashed brother Bobby on them. The Mafia obviously regarded this as a betrayal. There is an old Mafia saying to the effect that if you kill a dog's head, the tail will die. So they went after the head, John, and thereby took out the tail, Bobby, at the same time. In addition to Marcello, there is credible circumstantial evidence that Sam Giancana, the Chicago mob boss, and Santos Trafficante, the Florida boss, were also involved. As for Jack Ruby, who killed Oswald in a prototypical mob hit to silence him, he was a low level mob associate who originally was from Chicago. He got some of the strippers for his Dallas club from Marcello, who had clubs in New Orleans. As for Oswald, he spent time in New Orleans & his mother had worked as a secretary in one of Marcello's businesses. While Oswald was involved as either the shooter or one of the shooters, probably the truest words he ever spoke were, "I'm a patsy." The Mob set him up to take the rap, then silenced him.
One of the best books on the theory that the Mafia was involved is David E. Scheim's "Contract on America: the Mafia Murder of John F. Kennedy," originally published in 1988.
Afterwards, President Johnson appointed the Warren Commission and I believe he urged them to basically cover it up by assuring America that Oswald was the lone assassin. I believe that Johnson either knew or strongly suspected that there was a conspiracy involving the Mob or possibly Castro (another theory), but for the sake of "national security," he wanted it covered up. There was too much danger that Joe Kennedy's dealings with the Mafia or worse, the U. S. government's various dealings with them (e.g., John Kennedy's soliciting of their help to assassinate Castro), would be revealed. If he thought Castro was behind it, then we would have had to go after him and risk war with the Soviets. Either way, Johnson did not want this type of information to become public knowledge.

lee Harvey Oswald was charged but never went to trial because he was murdered by Jack Ruby several days later in the police cells. THere is actually a lot of evidence that does not support Oswald being the killer or acting alone. You should really watch JFK the movie. it is excellent

It was Lee Harvey Oswald. That's right. He shot him with a magic bullet. Magic does exist, we've known about it for some 2000 years now.

Wouldn't it be trippy if the truth just suddenly appeared here in Yahoo! Answers?
Suddenly it was there, simple, easy, everyone saw it and agreed. The last documents from the Warren Commision were unsealed and everyone involved who was still alive came foward and said, yes, that's the truth. Yahoo! Answers got it right.
Thank goodness for the internet.

It was officially blamed on Lee Harvey Oswald.
I think he was in on it but was set up as a patsy. There are too many loose ends the Warren Commission couldn't explain.

Lee Harvey Oswald This disappoints the conspiracy folks. The only question did he have some help. I suspect the conspiracy was one of doing nothing, knowing it was going to happen and doing nothing.
